Letter to the Whitstable and Canterbury Gazettes:
Well done to the protesters highlighting the extortionate price hikes for rail travellers last week. The £200 increase for a London season ticket is yet another example of the government's failure to provide public transport at an affordable level. The hike is yet another example of how the Coalition are hurting ordinary people.
While protesting about the rise in fares is necessary, the underlying problem that our rail services face is that they are no longer ours. Public services should be publicly owned and accountable which is why the Green Party is calling for the renationalisation of our railways, surprisingly the Green Party is the only major party to call for this.
Alongside renationalisation needs to go proper investment to ensure that our fares are as low as those on the continent and our services as reliable.
